Omnivore CFB Rankings

The Omnivore Computer Rankings (formerly known as rankR) is computer ranking system for FBS college football were created by Ron Bronson in 2007. He believed he could create a ranking that wasn’t as dependent on tradition and legacy, during the Bowl Championship Series era. The original ranking ran from 2007-2011.

The new algorithm attempts to do much of what the original one did – choose the best team in the nation using factors:

  • like strength of schedule
  • quality wins
  • defending home field
  • winning on the road
  • beating better teams
  • avoiding losses (especially bad ones)

After a five year hiatus coinciding with the advent of the College Football Playoff, the Omnivore rankings were revived for the 2016 season, mostly as an exercise in fun with math and data sets.

The Omnivore rankings are listed on the Massey College Football Ranking Comparison, as one of the 100 or so computer college football rankings on planet Earth. You can read more about the nerdy habit of computer college rankings via the New York Times story from 2012.
